Clean a single-lens reflex (SLR) digital or film camera's lens thoroughly to ensure no bits of dust or lint, or scratches, are on its glass.

    • 2). Set the camera to automatic according to the camera's instruction manual, and turn off its built-in flash function. These measures ensure the easiest photographs, or shooting, in natural light with minimal tweaking. If you are an experienced photographer with your own settings preferences, feel free to use them.

    • 3). Choose a subject for your photograph. Impressionist painters prefer rural outdoor scenes, but you may choose whatever scene you desire. Because color and light are important for Impressionist images, choose a subject that emphasizes vivid colors and natural light.

    • 4). Select your shooting perspective. Impressionist painters enjoy using unusual viewpoints for their paintings, and so you may shoot your subject from an unconventional place. Be creative, but don't simply photograph the subject directly.

    • 5). Set the lens' focus mode to manual. If the lens is only manual, leave it as is. If the lens has an optional auto-focus setting, find the switch on the lens body that turns it on and ensure that it is switched to the off position. This task will help you achieve the soft-edge appearance so valued by Impressionist painters.

    • 6). Aim your camera at your subject. If you use a variable-length lens, adjust the zoom until the viewfinder displays the image you want to photograph. If you use a fixed-length lens, walk toward or away from the subject until the image you see in the viewfinder is what you want to photograph.

Turn the focus ring on the lens until the viewfinder image is no longer in correct focus. You may shoot with a slightly out of focus lens or with a very out of focus lens, depending on how blurred and Impressionistic you want the image. Press the camera's shutter button down to take the picture.
