    • 1). Mix just a tad of water with baking soda to form a paste and use it to spot-clean stains away. Rub it in gently with a rag or sponge to lift stains. Test in a discreet area first to be sure the wet baking soda doesn't alter the fabric color or texture.

    • 2). Mix 2 cups of baking soda, 1/2 cup of cornstarch, 1 tbsp. of ground cloves and four crushed bay leaves as an alternative to step 1. This recipe makes an effective dry shampoo for rugs, according to Utah State University, and can be used to clean and remove odors from upholstered furniture.

    • 3). Vacuum the baking soda paste after it dries or has been on the fabric for at least an hour. Use the brush or upholstery attachment for the vacuum.
