Food Stamp Eligibility in Rhode Island

    Income

    • In general, Rhode Island bases food stamp eligibility on your household income in relation to your household size. As of 2011, households with an annual income equal to or less than 185 percent of the federal poverty level may qualify for food stamps. Under these guidelines, a family of four can make up to $40,792.50 per year, or $3,399.80 per month and qualify for food stamps. When the Rhode Island Department of Human Services calculates your eligibility for food stamps, you can make deductions for expenses such as shelter, child care and utilities, so even if your income is higher than this amount, you may still qualify.

    Resources

    • Rhode Island performs an asset test to determine your eligibility for food stamps. Under the rules established by the USDA, you cannot have more than $2,000 worth of resources and qualify for food stamps, or $3,000 if someone in the home is over age 60 or disabled. Resources include bank accounts, including checking and savings, and in some cases, your vehicle. Your home and retirement accounts are not considered resources. You will have to provide proof of the value of your resources when you apply for food stamps.

    Residency and Citizenship

    • Beyond the income and resource eligibility requirements, you must have been a resident of Rhode Island for at least three months prior to your application, and be a U.S. citizen or eligible non-citizen. When you apply for food stamps, you'll have to provide proof of your identity, as well as Social Security numbers for all members of the household included on the information. If you do not have a Social Security number, you'll have to provide proof that you have applied for one. Likewise, if you do not have proof of your citizenship, but have applied for citizenship, you can still be eligible if you supply a copy of your citizenship application.

    Expedited Food Stamps

    • In most cases, it can take up to 30 days to process food stamp applications and issue benefits in Rhode Island. However, in some cases, you may be able to receive expedited food stamp benefits and get help within seven days. If you have less than $100 in resources, expect to earn less than $150 that month, and/or are a migrant or seasonal worker, you can apply for expedited assistance.
