What Do Physical Therapists Wear?

104 5

    Requirements

    • Some physical therapists work in clinics or hospitals where they must wear uniforms such as a lab coat or scrubs.

    Comfort

    • Comfort is a major priority for any individual who completes a physical job or one requiring frequent movement. In addition to comfortable shirts and pants, the physical therapist should ensure foot comfort by investing in a few pairs of high-quality shoes.

    Movement

    • A physical therapist moves almost constantly on the job as he works with patients. Clothing that allows him to move freely while standing, sitting, squatting and bending is the best choice.

    Professionalism

    • Professionalism remains the standard by which any work clothing is judged, even for students in physical therapy programs who are working off-site, as described by the University of Delaware's Doctor of Physical Therapy policy handbook. This handbook describes jeans, sweatpants, sweatshirts, T-shirts and hats as inappropriate clothing for the work environment.

    Safety

    • A physical therapist works with people who have difficulty moving and finds herself in a variety of positions while helping patients complete exercises. Safety for both the physical therapist and her patients can be maintained by avoiding items that are long or billowy and might trip or catch a person.
