No matter where you live property crime is a problem and having the right burglar alarm is a good way to help secure your home from being broken into and having your valuables stolen.
In addition to installing a burglar alarm in your house you may want to look at adding home security cameras and motion detection devices as a way to enhance the quality of your home security system.
Making sure you have good locks and lighting is also something you might want to consider adding.
If you do get broken into and your valuables are stolen having them marked in some way to make them easier to identify when they are found is a good idea.
You can mark your valuables using micro dots, laser pens or ultraviolet pens.
Having items marked is a great deterrent as the burglar knows he can't sell them on the black market and pawn shop owners won't purchase them either.
Installing a burglar alarm is a successful deterrent as the police believe most burglary attempts are deterred when there is an alarm present.
There are many different kinds of alarms from the very expensive that are monitored by police or security firms to do-it-yourself kits.
There are silent, noisy, wired, wireless, door, window, motion, monitored and unmonitored systems available and come in all price ranges.
Adding a security sign in the front window or on a door is also a good way to deter a burglar.
Letting them know that you have an alarm means they will go somewhere else that is easier to get into.
One of the problems of having a burglar alarm system is setting it off accidentally.
This has become a huge problem for police departments as it is a waste of their resources.
In some cities fines are being imposed if an alarm system is tripped without cause on a regular basis.
In order to avoid false alarms make sure your motion detectors aren't triggered by small children or animals.
It should be set so it can detect an intruder and not a hanging planter swaying in the wind.
Also make sure your blinds and curtains aren't going to cause a false alarm if they move when the windows are open.
It is important that all members of your family know how to activate and deactivate the alarm when they leave or enter the house.
You might want to get younger children to practice a few times so they are familiar with the keypad.
Having a burglar alarm system installed is the first step in having a working home security system.
