Information on Rare Flowering Plants
- The rarest flower in the world is Middlemist's red camellia; there are only two known species of this plant -- one in England and the other in New Zealand. Other rare flowers include the jade climber (Strongylodon macrobotrys), bat flower (Tacca Integrifolia) and Himalayan blue poppy (Meconopsis betonicifolia).
- Middlemist's red camellia is native to China, but the remaining specimens reside in greenhouses. The jade climber is indigenous to tropical rain forests in the Philippines. Bat flowers are from the Southeast Asian jungles. The Himalayan blue poppy originates in the Himalayans.
- Middlemist's red camellia has a pink blossom that buds in spring. Jade climbers bloom spring through summer with cyan-colored flowers with navy-purple pod-like ends. Bat flowers have bat-shaped white or black inflorescence that flowers in May through November. The Himalayan blue poppy has a true blue flower with orange stamens and flourishes in summer.
