Lulu Membership

• 1). Visit the Lulu website and click "Sign up" in the top right corner. Enter your contact details, email address and payment details in the boxes when prompted.
  
  
• 2). Click "Publish" and select a book size. For example, you can publish your short stories in a softback pocket book. Make a note of the file dimensions.
  
  
• 3). Format your files. Lulu supports a range of file types and sizes. Select "settings" in your word processor and enter the margin sizes listed alongside the book sizes.
  
  
• 4). Save your files to your desktop. Click "browse" on the Lulu publishing platform. Select your files and hit "upload." Depending on the size of the file, this may take up to an hour.
  
  
• 5). Select publishing package. Lulu offers distribution and an ISBN assignment service, but these services have fees attached. The fees vary depending on the particular service, but as of March 2011, the "Children's Imagination" package costs $399. If you don't want to use any Lulu service, skip this section and proceed to checkout.
  
  
• 6). Order a proof copy. Before you decide whether to sell your book on Lulu's website, check that the quality meets your requirements. Select "order" and enter "1" into the box marked "Quantity." Enter your payment details when prompted. The cost depends on the type of paper, size and amount of pages in your book.
  
  

Create Space Membership

• 1). Call up Createspace.com and click "sign up." Enter your contact details. Create Space doesn't charge for publishing, they take a percentage of your fee. Their cut is typically $5.
  
  
• 2). Download "Primo PDF" from Primopdf.com. This is a free web application that converts Microsoft Word and Open Office documents into PDF files. Create Space only accepts PDF files.
  
  
• 3). Drag your short story book file onto the Primo PDF on your desktop. The application will convert your file into PDF.
  
  
• 4). Click the "Publish" link on the top left of your screen. Enter your title, author name and upload your PDF. Select a price for your book. Click "Finish" and enter your payment details when prompted so you can receive royalties. Create Space will review the file before printing it. If there any problems, Create Space will email you with instructions on how to fix it. Create Space will list your book on Amazon once accepted.
