What the Heck is Chi?

Many times if you go to an acupuncturist, massage therapist, or energy healer, they will talk to you about the flow of Chi within your body, and how it affects your health and well-being.

In Feng Shui, we talk about how Chi flows in your environment where you live and work, and how the flow of energy supports your family, career, finances, health and much more-even the quality of your sleep.

I recently visited an amazing Chinese medicine specialist in San Diego and spoke to her about Chi. This is what she had to say:

What is Chi? Chi is the life energy that flows throughout our body. Chi animates the body and protects it from illness, pain, and disease. A person's health is influenced by the quality, quantity, and balance of chi in both their bodies, and their environment.

How does Chi move? Chi flows through specific energy pathways in our bodies called meridians. There are 14 main meridians in the body. Each of these is connected to specific organs and glands inside of us. Meridian pathways are like rivers flowing in side the body. Where the river flows, it supports life-giving water that provides nourishment to the land, plants, and people. Inside of our bodies, Chi provides nourishment to every cell, organ, gland, tissue and muscle in our body.

An obstruction to the flow of Chi is like a dam. When Chi becomes backed up in one part of the body, the flow becomes restricted in other parts. This blockage of the flow of Chi can be detrimental to a person's health, cutting off vital nourishment to the body, organs, and glands.

How is the flow of Chi disrupted? Physical and emotional trauma, stress, lack of exercise, over-exertion, seasonal changes, poor diet, and excessive activity are some of the many things that can influence the quality, quantity and balance of Chi within us.

Normally, when blockage or imbalance occurs, after re-balancing the flow of Chi through acupuncture or massage for instance, the body easily bounces back, returning to a state of health and well-being. If Chi is left unbalanced for prolonged periods of time, it is believed that the body is weaker, more tired, and susceptible to disease and illness.

So how does this relate to Feng Shui? Feng Shui Practitioners believe that everything in the world, including your home and all of its contents is alive with a vital life force energy = Chi. Although Feng Shui is an ancient science that originated thousands of years ago, todays modern sciences of physics and quantum physics have both proven that everything around us is vibrating with its own unique energy! (TIP* check out the YouTube video "What the Bleep" (the water sequence), to get a visual frame of reference or watch the movie "The Secret".)

When you view the world in this way, everyday belongings like chairs, artwork, and equipment are transformed from lifeless "stuff " into vibrating, energy producing things that bring on certain thoughts, feelings and emotions in us, and the people who visit our home. When you live in an environment where the things around you influence your thoughts, feelings and emotions in this way, you will naturally want to make an effort to surround yourself with things that are positive, uplifting, and that help you to manifest your dreams.

Here's the bottom line: Your inner well-being (CHI) is constantly influenced by your outer environment, especially in the intimacy of your home. Your home has energy meridians and pathways just like your body does. In traditional compass feng shui practices we use a lo pan compass to locate these energy pathways, and make sure they are flowing freely, without getting blocked. Blocked chi= blocked energy= stagnation in an important part of our home= stagnation in part of our life.

BONUS: if you believe in Law of Attraction, and manifest wonderful things in your life through positivity and visualization, having vibrant energy flow (Chi!) in your home will super-charge your manifesting abilities!
