How Cement Rendering Can Make Buildings Beautiful and Durable

101 15
Since the beginning of history, people have built shelters to protect themselves from wild animals, weather and their enemies. The earliest buildings were simple, single-storey structures made of stone, mud, dried grass and wood. About 4000 BC, people discovered how to bake clay bricks. Contemporary building materials include bricks, steel, concrete as well traditional materials such as stone and wood.

Whatever the form of building – from the simplest mud huts to the multi-storeyed buildings – they can't be said to be complete unless the exterior and interior walls have been ‘rendered' or ‘finished' with suitable plastering materials. The art of house rendering is therefore as old as the history of construction.

Rendering serves various purposes. It not only makes the buildings nice-looking but also protects the surfaces from the elements of weather thus keeping the buildings cool and weatherproof.  Even today, the most primitive societies use traditional materials such as a mix of mud, animal dung and straw in various proportions for plastering the walls of their huts. Modern societies use either cement rendering (a mixture of cement, sand, lime and water) or acrylic rendering (a cement premix with various additives for extra adhesion and waterproofing).

Cement rendering is a coat of plaster applied to a masonry surface, making it thus the second last stage (that is, before painting and decorating) in a newly constructed building.  Cement rendering is versatile in that it can be applied to bricks, mud bricks, stone, and concrete. Depending on the required ‘look', cement rendering can be coarse, smooth, textured, pigmented or painted. House rendering on the outer walls improves the facade of the building while keeping the rainwater from seeping in and bouncing off the harsh sunlight (especially if the rendering is white).

Cement rendering is highly specialized job so it should be entrusted to only to skilled renderers. A job done by unskilled renderer will leave a lot of imperfections such as scratches and patches on walls, which though superficial at first will become clearly visible when the walls are painted.

Irrespective of the materials used, rendering makes your home beautiful and complete. Without it, the buildings will look drab and lifeless. Rendering is certainly not the preserve of the modern Western architecture. Indeed, in many parts of Asia and Africa, ethnic groups, especially women take great effort in rendering the walls of their abodes by creating artistic motifs and patterns.  So get going. Call a professional renderer to make your home beautiful and durable.
