How to Optimize Computer Memory

    • 1). Click "Start" and open the start menu. Select "Control Panel."

    • 2). Select the "System" icon. If using Windows Vista, select "System and Maintenance," and then select the system icon, or switch to "Classic View."

    • 3). Click "Advanced System Settings." Windows Vista will prompt you to select "Continue" to advance.

    • 4). You will notice a menu with five different tabs; select the "Advanced" tab. Locate the "Performance" option, and under Performance, select "Settings."

    • 5). Locate the "Advanced" tab here again. You will now see the amount of virtual memory assigned to your computer. According to Microsoft, this is 1.5 times the amount of RAM you currently have.

    • 6). To optimize your computer RAM, increase the virtual memory allotted hard drive space. If you have a small hard drive, you may only want to double the current virtual memory. If you have a larger hard drive, you can triple or quadruple the amount of virtual RAM.
