Here is Why I Won"t Follow You

SEO is still important in social media.
Very important.
Keywords will help you get found on Twitter.
They will also help you find others in your niche.
Use a variety of keyword locating tools that are free, like WEB CEO, Wordtracker or Google Keyword Tool.
These all provide in depth analytics that can guide you to your target audience.
One of the things I do whenever I join a social media site is to do a quick search for people who are interested in what I write about on my blog.
Because when I do post a link to a new article, my followers will be curious enough to want to read it.
Make sure you follow those in your niche.
Not only will you have a receptive audience to your tweets, you will also gain a higher profile ranking; Google is now assigning page rank to social media profiles on Twitter, so make sure you associate with credible users.
A word to the wise, 'you are judged by the company you keep' and if your followers are known spammers, then you will also have a spammy reputation.
Practice engagement with your followers.
People like conversation and discussion, so give it to them.
Don't just post sales messages and links.
This not only ranks poorly among Twitter (and can get your account banned), but you will be looked upon as a salesman.
Imagine you are at a cocktail party and you're just meeting a group of people you like.
The first thing out of your mouth won't be (I hope) "hey I work for a cable company, want to get cable?" A certain turn off for sure.
Many people will un-follow you if you post too many links, just a word to the wise.
Try posting some motivational quotes or sayings for a couple of weeks before you begin to tweet links.
Remember the 80/20 rule: 80% conversation and non-links to 20% links.
Do this, and thank me later.
Keep in mind that social networking is about interacting and finding like minded people to connect with.
Respect it for what it is, and you will gain many friends, and eventually customers.
Don't let the sale precede the friendship, if you do, you'll lose every time.
Find a way to combine the mechanics of social networking with SEO tactics and your online reputation will grow.
