How to Fight Seasonal Depression

103 9
If the holiday season makes you shudder with distress rather than quiver with delight, it may not be Christmas or New Year's Day that bothers you.
It could be a condition known as SAD, or Seasonal Affectedness Disorder.
This is a common problem in winter, and more frequent the further towards the poles you get.
There are things that can be done for SAD and many of them can be done at home.
The following suggestions should be discussed with your health care provider before implementation, however.
1) Activity: Every sort of depression tends to make you want to hide at home, preferably in a dark room.
That's not a good idea, as it only feeds the symptoms.
Get out and get involved.
Find volunteer work that means something to you, join a club or start working out in the gym.
If you belong to a church or other house of worship, get more involved there.
They can always use more helpers.
2) Herbs: Whether it's aromatherapy or a soothing cup of chamomile tea, herbs can be very useful at this point.
Several herbs, some stronger than others, have a reputation of soothing and relaxing those who enjoy them.
A qualified herbal practitioner and/or an aromatherapist may be able to help you find the right combinations.
3) Lights: Many scientists believe the key to SAD is in how much sunlight we get on a daily basis.
When that number keeps getting smaller, the cases of SAD start getting larger.
Light centers have been set up in several key northern locations in order to counter this affect.
A lot of people swear by this novel approach.
4) Outside: When you can...
when it's not to cold or cloudy...
try to get outside for a while.
Seeing the sunlight from your office window is not the same as being in the sun.
5) Tanning: This is a double edged sword.
I have been told that tanning beds, particularly in the far north, can get rid of the symptoms of SAD, and I suspect they are right.
However, let's not forget that the same UV light that causes skin cancer from sun exposure can do the same thing from tanning bed exposure.
This is a remedy that you should not take lightly.
It is best to get a true diagnosis about your condition from your doctor.
He or she can discuss with you the many options available and help you find the right ones for you.
This is even more important if you have any medical conditions or if you take medications.
