Some Fantastic Historic Houses to Visit in North Yorkshire

105 6
North Yorkshire is among the UK's most stunning natural areas, but it is not just the countryside for which the area is famed. The region, which is home to popular towns like Whitby and Scarborough, is also known for its rich and diverse human heritage. If you are interested in finding out more about the fantastic history of this beautiful place, read on to learn a little about some of this part of the country's very best houses and estates.

Firstly, the unique Treasurer's House in the city of York itself is a National Trust property like no other. The first of its kind to have been donated to the conservation group complete with a collection of personal artefacts - consisting of antique furniture, paintings, ceramics and textiles spanning a period of three centuries - this property, as the name would suggest, has a history in finance, originally being used as the home of the York Minster treasurer. It was the local industrialist Frank Green who really made the building what it is today, though, donating it to the National Trust when he moved away in 1930.

Beningbrough Hall, which is the estate of the tiny village of Beningbrough and is also not far from York, offers a truly relaxing experience to all who visit. The 18th century property, which again is now under the ownership of the National Trust, boasts some beautiful gardens, with highlights including Italianate borders and deep, tranquil woods. Inside the house, guests get the opportunity to immerse themselves in interactive galleries which feature some classic artistic works that are presented in collaboration with the National Portrait Gallery. The chance to dress up in traditional Georgian costume is another way that Beningbrough can help to bring its exciting history back to life for visitors!

Finally, Newby Hall and Gardens near Ripon is a fantastic attraction which is still independently owned by the Compton family, who have lived there since the middle of the 18th century. Newby Hall has everything that you could wish to find from a country estate, such as acres of award-winning gardens, Gobelins tapestries, Chippendale furniture, and even a miniature railway! The house was designed by Sir Christopher Wren himself, with the interior put together by the equally revered Robert Adam, and as such is a dream come true for fans of fine architecture. Guests of all ages will fall in love with Newby, where there will be something for everyone to enjoy.
