Definition and Symptoms Basically the term Hemorrhoids can be defined as a condition in which the veins surrounding the anus or lower rectum get swollen and inflamed.
Hemorrhoids may possibly result due to straining to move stool.
Other considerable factors can be listed as pregnancy, ageing, chronic constipation or diarrhea, and anal intercourse.
Hemorrhoids can be of two types, inside the anus-Internal - or beneath the skin around the anus-External.
Most of the anorectic problems, including fissures, fistulae, abscesses, or irritation and itching, also called pruritus ani, seem to show similar symptoms and may be sometimes incorrectly be referred to as hemorrhoids.
Hemorrhoids usually are not lethal or life threatening.
As observed in most of the cases, hemorrhoid symptoms fade away just after a few days.
Although many people inspire of having hemorrhoids, do not necessarily experience any symptoms.
Talking about symptoms, the most common one is that of internal hemorrhoids - bright red blood covering the stool.
Sometimes, an internal hemorrhoid may protrude out of the anus outside the body, getting irritated and painful.
This is called as a protruding hemorrhoid.
Now the external hemorrhoids are marked by the symptoms such as painful swelling or a hard lump around the anus which can be inferred as result of a blood clot formed.
This particular condition in general is called as a thrombosed external hemorrhoid.
Occurrence and Commonality In addition to the above mentioned reasons, excessive straining, scrubbing, or rubbing around the anus may lead to irritation with bleeding and/or itching, which may result in a vicious cycle of symptoms.
Itching, sometimes, may also be caused due to draining mucus.
Hemorrhoids are equally common in both men and women alike.
It is estimated that about half of the population has hemorrhoids by the time it turns 50.
Hemorrhoids are one common trait among pregnant women.
The abdominal pressure due to the fetus, as well as changes related to hormones, causes the enlargement of hemorrhoid vessels.
Even during childbirth the vessels undergo huge pressure which all the more contributes.
However, hemorrhoids caused by pregnancy seem to be just a temporary problem as observed in most women.
A proper evaluation and thorough diagnosis by the doctor becomes vital during the occurrence of bleeding from the rectum or blood in the stool.
Bleeding can also be considered as a symptom of various other digestive diseases, including colorectal cancer.
When examined by the doctor the whole concentration should be on anus and rectum so as to check for swollen blood vessels, an indication of hemorrhoids and will mark the need of a subsequent digital rectal exam using a gloved, lubricated finger so as to get a feel of the abnormalities.
Now closer evaluation of the rectum for hemorrhoids is only possible by conducting an exam using an anoscope, which is nothing but a hollow, lighted tube, finding its use in viewing internal hemorrhoids, or a proctoscope, for that matter which provides a more complete examination of the entire rectum.
Prevention It is a general practice of the doctor to examine the rectum and lower colon, or sigmoid, using a sigmoidoscope or the whole colon using a colonoscope.
The medical treatment of hemorrhoids starts from the scratch by trying to relieve symptoms by following measures like tub-bathing using warm water for 10 min on a daily basis and application of prescribed creams on the affected area for the suggested time.
The major step towards preventing the recurrence of hemorrhoids is relief from the pressure and straining of stools.
The prescribed diet for successful fight against hemorrhoids is having lots of fiber and drinking six to eight glasses of any fluid which would result in softer and bulkier stools - the solution to ease pressure of stools.
In general good sources of fiber are fruits, vegetables, and whole grains.
All in all the best way and possibly only way to prevent hemorrhoids is to maintain stools soft to ensure easy passage, decrease pressure and straining.
Also it's important to empty bowels once the urge occurs.
To sum it up exercising regularly and increased fiber in the diet are the sutras for reducing constipation and straining thereby preventing hemorrhoids.
