How to Design a Headstone for a Son's Grave

    • 1). Choose a headstone style. Many forms exist, such as a rectangular stone, rectangular with rounded top, cross, a rough unshaped stone or an arched stone.

    • 2). Choose one or more symbols to place on the stone. Symbols all have meanings in cemeteries. A lamb on or near a headstone represents a child. A broken branch or bud signifies a premature death, usually that of a child. If your son was an adult, consider choosing a symbol that identified his work, such as an anchor if he was a sailor or a flag or military symbol if he was in the armed forces.

    • 3). Write out what should be inscribed on the stone. Most stones display the name of the deceased and his birth and death date, whether full or partial. Consider additional wording. Many poems exist for children's stones, or perhaps your son had a favorite poem or quote. If he served in the armed forces, his unit information could be displayed.
