Sinhagad: A historical fortress near Pune city
According to the historical records, Sinhagad fort was captured by the Sultan of Delhi, Muhammad bin Tughlaq, in the early fourteenth century from a tribal chieftain, known as Nag Naik. In the year 1647, the great Maratha king, Shivaji, took control of this fort after refusing to accept the supremacy of Ibrahim Adil Shah I. He had to hand over Sinhagad fort to Adil Shah two years later for his father, Shahaji Bhosale's release. Shivaji managed to recapture it with the assistance of Bapuji Mudgal Deshpande in 1656. In the years that followed, there were several attacks launched by the Mughals on this fort; but all their attempts were unsuccessful until 1665, when it was acquired by Mirzaraje Jaysingh. Sinhagad bore the brunt of power struggles between the Mughals and Marathas for many years. However, the most famous event related to these battles is that of Tanaji Malusare's valour during the fierce battle of 1670. He had scaled the steep cliff of this fort with the help of a monitor lizard. Tanaji died fighting in this battle, but his brother Suryaji managed to capture Sinhagad from the Mughals. Tourists can witness the bust of Tanaji while exploring the fort, which was built in memory of his great courage leading to the victory of Marathas in the battle of Sinhagad.
This fort attracts plenty of visitors coming from distant places every year.
