Caring for Ziziphus

• 1). Plant the ziziphus in a sunny location. The greatest requirement for a thriving ziziphus is to plant it in a sun-drenched location. This tree is drought resistant, so do not hesitate to plant it in a dry location. The tree will fill in quickly and create shade in the area you have selected.
  
  
• 2). Feed the tree. Ziziphus trees can thrive in even the most nutritionally deficient soils; however, amending the soil will help your tree establish a strong root system more quickly. For new trees, add a rich potting soil or compost to the bottom of the hole before planting the tree. Mix in the potting soil or compost with the remainder of the soil used to fill the hole. For established trees, utilize a commercial fertilizer formulated for trees, or add compost to the top layer of the soil. Always follow the manufacturer's instructions closely when using a commercially prepared fertilizer.
  
  
• 3). Water the ziziphus. These trees are very drought resistant, but they do benefit from frequent watering. Water these trees weekly, excluding weeks in which it receives rain. While under-watering this tree is virtually impossible, over-watering it is a danger.
  
  
• 4). Prune the tree in late winter. Ziziphus trees do not require regular pruning; however, if you notice dead, damaged or diseased limbs, prune them away from the tree with pruning shears. Exercise caution when pruning this tree, as its spines can cut and snag. Discard the pruned limbs and dispose of them according to your town's ordinances.
  
  
• 5). Harvest the fruits. If you choose to consume the fruits, they are best harvested when the fruits have turned a deep red. Fruits high on the tree are easily shaken loose from the tree. If you choose to harvest but not consume the fruits, you can simply shake the tree once the fruits begin to spoil and leave them on the ground. These fruits attract and feed birds and other wildlife, leaving them to do the cleanup for you.
