How to Learn Listening Skills

    • 1). Focus all of your attention on the speaker. Whether you are listening to a speech or conversing with a fellow employee, it's extremely important that you are completely present mentally and not distracted by other factors. Try to avoid daydreaming and do not allow your thoughts to drift to other matters.

    • 2). Keep your eyes focused on the speaker if listening to a speech and maintain eye contact when conversing one-on-one. This shows the person that you are interested in what they have to say and will help the flow of the speech or conversation.

    • 3). Keep an open mind while processing the speaker's information. Don't allow any biases or preconceived notions to prevent you from learning new, potentially valuable information.

    • 4). Actively listen to the speaker by using body language cues. For example, lean forward or occasionally nod your head to show that you are interested. If you are conversing one-on-one it's a good idea to occasionally paraphrase the content of the conversation in your own words to ensure that you understand what the speaker is saying.

    • 5). Do not interrupt the speaker even if you don't agree with what he is saying. This is a sign of disrespect and should be avoided. Instead, wait until he is through speaking to give your opinion.
