How to Fight Sinus Infections

    • 1). Fight sinus infections by allowing mucus in your nasal passages to drain properly. Steam or moisture in the air allows nasal secretions to flow more freely and can also make coughing more productive. Run a humidifier in your home, take frequent hot showers or give yourself a homemade steam bath using a mixing bowl and hot water.

    • 2). Drink at least eight 8 oz. glasses of water each day when you are trying to fight off a sinus infection. The Mayo Clinic explains that staying hydrated (avoid alcoholic or caffeinated drinks) thins out mucus and leads to proper drainage.

    • 3). Use nasal spray to moisten dry nasal membranes or to relieve congestion that accompanies a sinus infection. Non-medicated saline spray or sprays that contain a decongestant medication may make you more comfortable.

    • 4). Ease the pain that you may feel in your forehead or around your eyes with warm compresses. A warm, damp washcloth may be used as needed to dull pain and promote nasal drainage.

    • 5). Take over-the-counter pain relievers to reduce sinus pressure and headaches that may accompany a sinus infection. Follow the directions on the packaging or as advised by your doctor.

    • 6). Schedule an appointment with your doctor if your sinus infection does not improve after two weeks, if you develop a fever or if you experience thick, rust-colored, malodorous nasal discharge. These signs may indicate your sinus infection is bacterial in nature and may require antibiotics.
