How VA Disability Works
- You must not have had a dishonorable discharge to be eligible for disability compensation. The federal government determines whether you will receive the benefits based on your application.
- Disabled veterans apply for disability compensation either by using the hardcopy VA Form 21-526, Veterans Application for Compensation and/or Pension, or by applying online.
- The government considers several things when processing your application for disability benefits, such as the severity of the disability, marital status, children or other dependents and whether your spouse is also disabled. You may be asked to provide documentation related to your discharge along with a marriage license, children's birth certificates or medical records of your disability.
