• Research is key when executing evidence-based policing policies. Conducting thorough research on past cases and their eventual results helps law enforcement determine what works and what doesn't in regard to the collection of evidence, the interrogation of suspects, the interviewing of witnesses and the securing of evidence for trial. Documenting the most effective police policies helps law enforcement to evaluate which tools are most effective in maintaining public safety and which are counterproductive to law enforcement.
  
  

Implementation

• Once research has been conducted to determine which polices work best, implementation of these policies is key to the success of future investigations. Implementation of future practices may consist of the revision of official policies and training materials and the replacement of traditionally approved routines with techniques that have proved most effective based on research. Based on jurisdiction, implementation of these policies may be imposed city, county or state-wide.
  
  

Training

• Regular training of law enforcement officers is paramount to the successful implementation of evidence-based policing. This is particularly true when long recognized policies are changed to reflect techniques that have proved more effective. Training in evidence-based policing can include class room training, instruction in specialized skills and the issuance of manuals that reflect updated policies and procedures. Once training has been offered, enforcement of these policies should be mandatory for maximum effectiveness.
  
  

Evaluation

• Once polices have been revised, and law enforcement has been trained in improved investigative techniques, regular evaluations are key to ensuring enforcement of these policies and to improve public safety. Evaluations include the one-on-one observance of officers while on the job, regularly scheduled meetings to discuss department policy and the implementation of routine refresher courses to keep officers apprised of changes to policy as they occur. Failure to abide by enhanced evidence-based policies are typically considered in performance reviews and may present cause for disciplinary action.
