External hemorrhoids have always been a little hard to put one phrase of a definition to.
Wikipedia Dictionary defines it as swelling and inflammation of veins in the rectum and anus.
The anatomical term "hemorrhoids" technically refers to "cushions of tissue filled with blood vessels at the junction of the rectum and the anus".
However you define it, if it is causing you problems like itching, pain, and swelling and bleeding then you want it gone.
Various proven helpful ways are available over the counter if minor and through your doctor if more serious.
There are home things you can do to ease the discomfort such as; adding fiber to your diet, losing weight, not straining at the toilet, finding the cause of your hard stools or watery stools as both will cause hemorrhoid discomfort, drinking more water and better posture.
If you need to use external medications for your hemorrhoids then the following will help you decide what is right for you.

Antipruritics These substances are placed on as a cream or gel and are used to relieve or prevent itching.

Anesthetics Probably the most common over the counter medication used for external hemorrhoids is an anesthetic.

Different types of topical anesthetics include; Lidocaine, Benzocaine, Tetracaine and cyclonine.
Corticosteroids There job is to reduce inflammation and relieve itching and they do it rather well, but there is one drawback with this medication.

Keratolytics These are medications that cause the outer layer of the skin and other tissues to disintegrate and slough off.
By doing this it allows other medicines that are applies to the area to work better by being allowed to penetrate deeper into the tissues.
There are two approved: Aluminum chlorhydroxy allantoinate and Resorcinol.
Most of these medications come in creams, gels, suppositories and ointments.
