Lets Acknowledge The Hardships That Our Military Personnel Endure

In most societies the military is looked at as almost an underclass group of citizens. They are basically given the job that no one else wants to do and are looked upon with disdain by many because they deal with the hardships that they endure. Military hardships are not only endured by the troops who fight in the war but they are endured by their family members to include the extended family members.

The first hardship that I will mention are the long periods of separation that occur when a spouse is deployed overseas or on an extended training exercise. Nor only does the deployed family member have to endure the harshness of a different and sometimes extreme environment he or she also has to endure prolonged separation from loved ones. In some cases a service member may have to deploy for a year and be reassigned upon his or her return to another unit which is preparing to deploy. I have seen this happen on more occasions than I care to remember.

The face and attitude of the military in presently changing from one where force was often the difference in motivating soldiers to perform to one where soldiers are self directed and dont need to be told everything all of the time. Im saying all of that to make this point. Soldiers are more professional than ever and they understand the circumstances of a given situation very well. They will have to perform when they have to. We are stretched so thin with this war on terror that it gives the new an impression of the military which is not necessarily the way it is. It is nor necessarily war all of the time year in and year out. We had sort of a golden age after the War in Vietnam. The military was not called on tto do much other than train for a very long time. Now the situation is completely different. We find ourselves in a war which kas lasted for abourt nine years now with no end in sight. Never have we had to do so much with so little and even these young dynamic soldiers have began to grow weary.

The military service member has to deploy sometimes with improper equipment that does not fit in with the circumstances that he or she has to operate in. Many times they may have to deploy rapidly leaving no time for the military to do everything that it should. The soldier will endure these circumstances because a war will not wait for you to catch up with it. A very good example of this was the first invasion of Kuwait by Saddam Hessein. Soldiers of the 82nd Airborne Division were rushen in to defend Saudi Arabia. These paratroopers are light infantry soldiers. They were not equipped at all to fight against the heavy Iraqi tanks and armored personnel carriers thay they would have had to face. It took about thirty days for the United States to get an entire heavy division into Saudi Arabia.

The family members of our Special Operations soldiers have to really go through an awful lot for their loved ones. Special Ops troops will sometimes deploy for long periods of time with no warning and no chance of communication. During these times the family members may not know if their family members are serving in a real world situation. I have also seen many incidents where family members were notified that their loved one was deceased and given only vague details of the circumstances. Many of the cases have been closed casket funerals where the remains of the loved one could not even be viewed.

We should appreciate our soldiers and the things that they go through. There are many military incidents that America and the rest of the world never even find about about. Whether they occur with special operations units or regular ground units many times they cost the lives of our soldiers. I have seen the conditions that our troops sometimes have to endure and endure is what they do. If each and every American had to endure the same conditions for a very short period of time it would cause us to appreciate our soldiers exponentially more than we currently do.

In the case of special operations soldiers secrecy will prevail in every conceivable situation. Special Operations troops have conducted many missions and saved many more lives than America and the rest of the world will ever know about. Many of our regular troops have seen situations that would make you gasp if you heard about them. Whatever you do don't take our armed forces for granted. Military Ring Express
