The President" s Directed Military Review
My spidey sense tells me that this is something that we might need to keep an eye on. The President has ordered a Fundamental review of the military services. This may sound innocent but the key word here is Fundamental. The review may be totally necessary and I agree that it probably is but it seems that it will denote sweeping basic changes to the way that our military conducts ninety percent of its business. The big thing that the military will probably need to watch out for is budget cuts.
It seems to me that the top dogs are looking to make sweeping and fundamental changes to the way that the military will be used to conduct business in the future which is totally necessary. I think that we have all seen as evidenced by the war of terror that the days or prolonged slugfests where huge armies duke it out are long gone. We still need to maintain a strong military in order to deter any potential aggressors.
The stated purposes of the review are to review the missions of our armed forces, its capabilities, and our role in a changing world.
We need to redefine our missions and purpose in the world. The war on terror has proven to be a costly blunder. There is no way that we can wipe out terrorist or terrorism anywhere in the world. At best we may be able to keep them out of the US if we pull our assets in and concentrate on protecting our own borders and people from terrorists and their operations.
We will probably need to transform our forces to be able to conduct numerous small operations around the world. We need to be able to project forces quickly and efficiently to problem areas. Once there they need to be able to make a serious firepower statement. This type of warfare seems to suit our carrier fleets more than our armies. It takes the army a longer time to deploy and once they do they need a large sustained logistical base in order to be able to conduct a successful offensive. Once they have accomplished their mission they need to be packed up and transported back. Carrier strike groups are already self contained and ready to move. They have a logistics system in place which operates constantly so there dont have to be any special changes to accommodate war. They have enough inherent firepower to take out a whole lot of real estate. They can project a small land based force for a while but the impact that they will have on operations is limited. If they remain in the area for any period of time they will need the support of the army.
The army is a land force but it takes longer to fully deploy a large land force and to transport enough supplies to make it fully functional. In addition it takes a long time to disengage them from combat operations and redeploy them.
Our army will be useful for many other purposes. There are many threats to our national security other than terrorists. We need to be able to deal with them on a case by case basis. Our army will have to be flexible and diverse in order to deal with the many areas of threat.
The Presidential review will probably take all of these things into account. We might see drastic sweeping changes to our military budget and organization. The face of warfare has changed drastically and probably for the good. We will have to adapt our forces and tactics to accommodate the changes. Military Ring Express
