Patience and Persistence in Puppy Training

103 8
Do you know the secret to puppy training? Patience and persistence! If you are not a professional dog trainer, you will often find yourself at wit's end when training your puppy to do even the simplest things (in your opinion that is).
Bear in mind that what may be a simple behavior for you to teach may not be easy for your new pup or even your more mature dog to learn.
Coupled with consistency, kindness and love, patience and persistence will go a long way in training your puppy of whatever age.
Some puppies can pick up commands and acceptable behaviors quickly.
Other canines will need more time to learn what you are teaching.
Patience is a virtue When you see a puppy do a neat trick on screen, bear in mind that it took the trainer many hours of work to achieve this.
A puppy should never be expected to learn a behavior in one or two tries.
Some owners tend to expect their canine pals to know how to sit, stay, roll-over and go potty after a few sessions.
After a few unsuccessful attempts at, for example, teaching the puppy how to shake hands (paws) with them, some puppy owners give up.
Their excuse: the puppy is not bright enough to learn a trick.
Experts have proven time and again that all dogs have the ability to learn.
And contrary to what others say, even an old dog CAN learn new tricks.
The owner may be using the correct method of instructing the puppy, but he may not have the patience to see the training through.
It is the same in teaching a child to write his name, you have to be patient in showing the child how to hold and move the pencil.
Patience should be partnered with kindness and love.
Understand that your puppy does not speak English, French or Swahili.
He speaks the language of love, understanding kindness and patience.
Dogs naturally want to please their masters.
Treat him well and he will be all too eager to do your bidding.
Persistent training yields top puppy results.
The other half of the training equation is persistence.
You may be patient with your dog, but are you persistent with the training? A puppy learns through repetition of an action, activity or behavior.
When your puppy does not get a command right the first three times, don't be discouraged.
Don't give up yet, your determination should pay off as long as you are consistent with him.
The two P's Success in puppy training will only come with the two P's - patience and persistence.
Take for instance potty training.
A number of dogs are not housebroken for the simple reason that their owners gave up on potty training (or maybe they do not mind cleaning up after a puppy that eliminates anywhere and everywhere).
A puppy doesn't come pre-wired with information on where (and when) you want him to go.
Nor does his mother tell him to be polite and excuse himself when he needs to go potty.
Housebreaking is not for the impatient puppy owner.
You have to religiously bring your puppy to the proper potty area at specific times of the day.
If he won't go potty immediately, learn to wait.
After all, he has his own body clock just like you.
When she successfully relieves herself in the right place, praise her lavishly.
Potty trained dogs are those dogs that have owners who patiently and persistently took the time to housebreak them.
You have seen dogs do amazing tricks on television and the movies: counting, adding numbers, jumping through flaming rings, dancing and more.
None of these actions come naturally for dogs.
The more unnatural an action or behavior is, the more patience and persistence you will need in training your dog.
A new puppy is just that, a dog.
For him to become the ideal well-behaved, well-adjusted and full of neat tricks kind of puppy takes a lot of work from you.
Stay committed to puppy training.
Remember, patience and persistence are the secrets to raising a well-trained dog.
