Use the online e-VetRecs tool from the National Archives and Records Administration to request a copy of the DD-214, if you are the veteran or next of kin and searching for records from World War I to the present time. Be prepared to enter information such as your relationship to the veteran, the veteran's branch of service and service component, dates of service and other personal information. At the conclusion of the request, you will need to print the signature confirmation sheet or write the information on a separate piece of paper. Sign the sheet and mail it to the National Personnel Records Center.

If you are unable to print the form, it can be ordered through the mail by writing a request to the National Personnel Records Center; or it can be picked up from any Federal Information Center, Veterans Administration offices or Veteran Service Organization. Sign the completed form and mail it to the proper address indicated in the table on page 2 of the form.
- 3). Submit a written request for military records, if you are unable to complete steps 1 or 2. The letter must include as much information as possible about the veteran and his service to differentiate the file from the more than 70 million files on record at the National Personnel Records Center.
