How to Troubleshoot a Dynamo Pool Pump

104 5
    • 1). Check the Dynamo pump base for stability. If the pool pump is on uneven and unstable ground, the internal moving parts will cause the pump to vibrate. Too much rattling will damage your Dynamo pump and affect its ability to function.

    • 2). Clean out the pool pump basket and the skimmer basket. Clean the skimmer basket by reaching into the pool skimmer and taking out the skimmer basket. Dump excess debris if necessary. To clean the Dynamo pump basket, turn off the pool filter and unplug the pump. Loosen the lid on the Dynamo pump basket. Once you open the lid, reach in and pull out the pump basket. Dump any excess debris that is in the pump basket and replace it. Replace the lid and plug in the pump. Too much debris in the pump basket prevents the water from flowing freely through the filtration system.

    • 3). Examine the Dynamo pump impeller. If cleaning the debris didn't resolve the problem, it's time to check the impeller. The impeller is in back of the pump basket. To access the Dynamo impeller, turn off the pump, remove the pump basket lid, remove the pump basket and reach into the tube connecting the pump basket to the impeller. If there's debris stuck on the impeller remove it. While you're there, touch the impeller to see if it wobbles. If it wobbles, it may need adjusting or replacement. Take the pump to an authorized technician to have the impeller adjusted or replaced.

    • 4). Look for leaks around the pump filter system. Leaking water allows the water to escape and air to get into the pump filtration system. A Dynamo pool pump operates most efficiently in a vacuum environment. If air gets into the filtration system, it compromises the air-tight vacuum environment and affects the pump's ability to work properly. If you detect leaks around the pool hoses, tighten them.

    • 5). Listen to the Dynamo pump motor for whining or grinding sounds. As the motor on the Dynamo pump ages, it begins to make loud sounds. A loud whining or grinding sound is an indication that the bearings need replacing. If you are not familiar with the inner workings the Dynamo pump motor, it's best to take it to a technician to have the bearings replaced.
