    • The state of Kansas has several levels of permits available to teen drivers. The permits and license available to teens under the age of 17 become less restrictive as the permit holders get older. Teens as young as 14 have the option of applying for an instructional permit.

    Instruction Permit

    • The requirements for an instruction permit depend on the permit holder's age. All instruction permit holders must present an acceptable proof of identity such as a birth certificate, passport or military id. Kansas requires a vision test, as well as a written test if the applicant does not have a certificate of completion for driver's education. The permit holder must have a licensed passenger over the age of 21 in the front seat at all times. Permit holders under the age of 17 must carry the instruction permit for a year before advancing to a restricted license.

    Farm Permits

    • Farm permits are available at the age of 14 in the state of Kansas. In order to receive a farm permit, the applicant must show acceptable proof of identity, parental consent and a farm affidavit. The applicant must also take a vision exam and written exam if there is no certificate of completion of driver's education. Permit holders may not use any wireless communications device while driving unless reporting illegal activity. Permit holders under the age of 16 may use the farm permit to drive to and from a farm job, to and from school, or anywhere, anytime with a licensed passenger over the age of 21. They may not transport non-sibling minors. Farm permit holders over the age of 16 may receive a less restricted permit after completing and turning in an affidavit affirming 50 hours of driving experience.

    Restricted License

    • In order to receive a restricted license, the applicant must show acceptable proof of identity, parental consent and completion of driver's education course, as well as pass a vision test. The applicant must have held an instructional permit for at least one year. The license holder cannot transport any non-sibling minors and cannot use wireless devices while driving. To move to a less restricted license at the age of 16 ,the license holder must complete and turn in an affidavit affirming 50 hours of driving experience. Less restricted license holders can drive anytime, anywhere between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m.

    Non-restricted Driver's License

    • In order to receive a non-restricted driver's license the applicant must be 17 years or older, provide acceptable proof of identity, pass a vision exam and pass a written exam unless he provides a certificate of completion for driver's education.
