How to Change Your Thinking to Change Your Life

105 8
Change your thinking and it will change your future. Most people in attempting to change their future make the mistake of trying to change something outside themselves.
As Shakespeare said, 'the more things change, the more they stay the same'.
It is often extremely difficult to recognise that as creative beings, we are the architects of our own destiny. It is much easier to believe that we are the victim of fate. But living as a victim is a sure way to remain powerless and ineffective. You really need to start believing that you can take control of your life and ultimately change the course of your destiny.
'some ships ply east and some ply west, by the self same wind that blows,
it's not the GALE but the set of the SAIL that determines which way they go'.
This old adage perfectly illustrates that we are not victims of the winds of fate. You can determine which way you go in life and the outcome of life's journey.
If you are not happy with the direction of your life then it is time to start taking stock of why this is. The first place to start looking for the source of the problem is in your thinking. Your attitudes and perceptions are the starting point that leads to the outcomes that you ultimately dislike.
So, just how do you change your thinking? It is imperative that you become aware of the connection between your thinking and your attitudes. The most effective way to do this is to keep a daily journal. A daily journal is a written record of how you think and behave, and the more accurate the record, the better able you are to recognise the connection between your thinking and your behaviour.
Most human beings are reactors. They react to events that are apparently happening outside in the world around them. But on closer examination it can be seen that they are in fact reacting to certain pre-conditioned ideas that originate in themselves.
This can be understood by seeing the reaction of different people to the same set of circumstances. What is happening on the outside has no power to affect us if there wasn't some pre-conditioning that already existed on the inside. Just like a radio signal travelling through space. If there wasn't a receiver available, the radio wave would have no effect.
Or take the example of a flower. If human beings didn't have an inbuilt sense of smell, the perfume of the flower could not have any effect on them.
Out thinking and attitudes are our inbuilt mechanism for making sense of our lives, and in order to have a different experience, we need to change these inner 'receivers' in order to change our experience of what is happening on the outside.
Right thinking leads to right understanding. Right understanding leads to right action!
