About Hummingbird Feeders

    Types

    • Hummingbird feeders come in variety of sizes and shapes. Basic feeders, available in department and hardware stores in early spring, sell for under $10 and will last for several seasons. These simple feeders constructed from plastic feature a globe-shaped reservoir for the nectar and a simple base with four or more ports for feeding.
Larger feeders with as many as eight to 10 ports support a large population of hummingbirds and allow many to feed at one time. Reservoirs hold as much as two quarts of nectar and come in a variety of decorative designs.
Glass and metal feeders are more durable and last for years, but simple plastic feeders are just as effective in attracting hummingbirds.

    Function

    • Hummingbird feeders require nectar as the source of food. Pre-made hummingbird nectar available in quart or gallon containers provides a mess-free way to feed hummingbirds. Simply unscrew the base with the ports from the reservoir, pour the nectar into the feeder and replace the base. Invert the feeder and tip to the side to release any air bubbles that may block the feeding ports. Hang in an area out of direct sunlight, on a shady deck in front of a north or eastern facing window or from small tree branches.
Make your own hummingbird nectar by mixing one cup of boiling water to ¼ cup of sugar. Stir to dissolve sugar crystals completely. Add a few drops of red food coloring if preferred. Red attracts hummingbirds, but the coloring is not necessary. Store unused nectar in the refrigerator for up to one week.

    Features

    • Most hummingbird feeders have red bases and yellow feeding ports that attract hummingbirds without coloring the nectar. Some feature decorative designs in shades of red as additional attractants. Simple test tubes filled with nectar and hung from a tree branch provide a quick meal for hungry hummingbirds. A red ribbon or a few decorative beads attract the attention of hummingbirds and encourage them to come closer to investigate. Once a feeder is discovered, hummingbirds eagerly return, regardless of decoration or color.

    Warning

    • Hummingbird feeders filled with nectar often develop black mold in crevices and around the feeding ports, particularly in hot weather. Mold is harmful to hummingbirds and must be removed. Clean feeders on a weekly basis or sooner if you notice mold beginning to form. Detach the base from the reservoir and rinse with warm water to remove any sticky nectar. Most bases come apart easily for cleaning. Dissemble the base and clean with a soft bristled brush to remove any black mold or other residue. Use a nipple brush or other small brush to reach inside the feeder and clean all areas of the reservoir. Adding a few pebbles or grains of rice and shaking vigorously loosens difficult-to-reach residue. Rinse with hot water and refill with nectar.

    Considerations

    • Hummingbirds return to the feeder regularly throughout the day and depend on you for food. Check feeders often and fill regularly to maintain a constant food supply.
