Resorts in Bali"s Northwest - Near the West Bali National Park

106 13
The northwest coast of Bali is as far from thickly-touristed South Bali as you can go - quite literally. Getting here requires three or so hours' driving, but the long trip is worth it. The resorts listed here are mostly located in and around the village of Pemuteran, near five sacred Balinese temples (find out more about Balinese temples) and the West Bali National Park (Wikipedia), a haven for divers, snorkelers, kayakers and trekkers.

Matahari Beach Resort

Matahari Beach Resort is a five-star establishment in Pemuteran set in a four-hectare garden populated by exotic Balinese flora like bougainvillea, melati trees, and oleander. The resort's 32 air-conditioned guestrooms are sorted into garden view, premium garden view, deluxe, and super deluxe room classes.

The rooms come with large marble bathrooms looking out to outdoor private showers; marble terraces; and free WiFi. The interiors are crafted from local materials by experienced Balinese artisans, whose skill can be seen in the hand-carved folding doors and four-poster beds.

A large pool on the premises helps cool off guests who prefer not to go to the black volcanic sand beach nearby. Hungry guests can enjoy the breakfast buffet served at the "Dewi Ramona" restaurant, or evening barbecues at the Leon Beach Bistro. The Parwathi spa onsite resembles a Balinese water palace, and specializes in local treatments like 2-, 4-, and 6-hand massages.

The Menjangan

The Menjangan is the only resort located completely within a nature reserve. The resort's 382 hectares are completely inside the borders of the Bali Barat National Park, allowing the Menjangan's guests to enjoy Bali's natural riches 24 hours a day, on foot, on horseback, via kayak, or snorkeling or diving in the waters off of the Park. The size of the sprawling resort grounds requires guests to get around using all-terrain shuttles.

The resort's 22 rooms come in the following classes: Monsoon Deluxe, Monsoon Suite, Beach Villa, and the Menjangan Residence, all with "Zen-like" Spartan interiors that come with LED TVs, iPod docks, and WiFi. Other amenities include a dive shop, swimming pool, and a 20-meter sail boat that guests can rent for sunset cruise dinners.

Amertha Bali Villas

An oceanfront resort near the Pulaki Agung Temple (more on Bali temples) and Pemuteran Beach, the Amertha Bali Villas lies in close proximity to the northwest's cultural and natural tourist spots. 32 air-conditioned guestrooms (housed in 14 villas) come in three room classes: Oceanfront, Ocean View, and Mountain/Garden View.

All guestrooms are non-smoking; you can choose to book just a suite (in which case the kitchen and pool may be shared with other suite residents in the same villa) or book the whole villa for your party. Other resort amenities include an oceanfront restaurant and bar, access to the beach, a beachside pool, and a traditional Balinese spa. Spa services may be enjoyed either indoors or out on the beach.

For more adventurous guests, boat rides to Menjangan Island (and its access to diving and snorkeling) may be booked onsite.

Taman Sari Bali Resort and Spa

Six private pool villas, six beachfront suites, and two ocean-view junior suites in the Taman Sari are built from all-natural materials with an eye towards eco-friendliness. The villas present the most luxury and privacy, with their own medium-size plunge pool and open-air gazebo. Around the large property, you'll find manicured gardens and lily ponds, helping increase the feeling of being lost amidst nature.

The resort's amenities include a beachfront restaurant that serves breakfast, lunch and dinner, and a pool overlooking the sea, next to a sunken bar that serves drinks to swimmers. The beach provides plenty of bean bags and lounge chairs for guests. After diving or swimming, you can request spa services to be administered either in your room or on the beach.

Tirta Sari Bungalow

The two-star Tirta Sari Bungalow provides 15 guestrooms with individual private patios, air conditioning, and free Wi-Fi. Large groups can book one of the two Family units, each one a bungalow with two rooms and a kitchen. The interiors are furnished in traditional Balinese style, with the inclusion of carved wooden doors and large private gardens.

Outside the room, you'll find a swimming pool with a swim-up bar; further beyond, a few minutes' walk away, the black sand beach awaits swimmers and snorkelers. The restaurant serves a decent meal, but if you want to be more adventurous, a number of warung (food stalls) can be found outside the resort.

The Kubuku Ecolodge offers 14 guestrooms for travelers on a budget, all spacious and air-conditioned. Room amenities include a safety deposit box , terrace, and hot running water in the bathroom. Guests hankering for TV access should report to the resort restaurant.

The resort's gardens have a number of fruit trees shading the area; the Kubuku Ecolodge is set at a remove from the beach, although the in-house diving shop can hook you up for dives off the Menjangan island. Guests who want to cool off within the premises can try the swimming pool onsite. Students from the community school next door occasionally entertain guests with traditional Balinese performances.
