Arvoredo Island - Top Diving Destination in Southern Brazil

Arvoredo Island Overview:

Arvoredo Island is one of Brazil's Biological Reservations. The reservation was created in 1990.

Although Arvoredo Island, off the coast of Santa Catarina, is considered th top diving destination in southern Brazil, diving is currently under restrictions. The gateway to Arvoredo Island is the city of Bombinhas, located about 74 kilometers (about 46 miles) from state capital Florianópolis.

The island is the largest in a group that includes Deserta, Galés and Calhau de São Pedro Islands.

Diving in Arvoredo Island:

As of the time of this writing, only the south side of Arvoredo Island is open to diving. Divers must contact a diving center such as Acquatrek or Patadacobra, which have a permission from ICMBio, the Brazilian environment agency.

Wildlife at Arvoredo Island:

Sea turtles, hairy blenny, and Southern stingrays (Dasyatis americana) are some of the species that can be found around Arvoredo Island. The native Atlantic Forest preserve on the island shelter small mammals, such as bats and skunks.

Arvoredo Island Lighthouse:

Opened in 1883, the Arvoredo Island lighthouse is now powered by solar energy, as are other Brazilian Navy facilities on the island.
