Salvador, with five centuries of history, is an ideal setting for boutique hotels, and Hotel A Casa das Portas Velhas ("The House of Old Doors"), by the beautiful Nossa Senhora das Palmas Church (1630) in the Mouraria district, stands out with 15 rooms with touches of European style and its theme décor (old doors).

The 19th-century sobrado, or multi-story house, which now has an elevator, underwent thorough restoration before becoming a hotel in 2004.

On the first floor, a museum shows objects found during the restoration process.

The theme shows up in the doors used as such and in decorative details, for example a door used as a headboard.

There are 15 guest rooms of varying sizes. The Porter (Master) suite has a living room and a mini kitchen. All rooms have perks such as non-allergenic pillows and carpets, personalized robes and slippers and internet access.

The hotel has a bar, the Dionisio restaurant serving a blend of regional and Italian cuisine and "A Dobradiça" (The Hinge), a business center and a shop selling local crafts.

Ask about honeymoon/romance packages and perks such as shuttle service to and from Pelourinho.
