Games to Help You With Geography
- Piece together your understanding of geography by creating a map puzzle. Purchase a map and cut it apart yourself, or ask a friend to cut it apart for you. Gather the pieces together in an envelope. When you need a break from standard studying, pull out those pieces, lay them out on a table and try to put them back together to create the original map using your knowledge of geography to assist you.
- Develop the ability to pair countries and their capital cities by creating a matchup activity. Begin by writing the names of countries you have studied on index cards. On separate index cards, write the names of the capitals of these countries. Jumble together your index cards. Quiz yourself by trying to place the cards into country/capital pairs. If, after pairing some, you are left with some that you can't pair, reference your geography text for assistance.
- See just how quickly you can identify countries on a map by creating a map label race. Purchase or print a map, or copy one out of your textbook. Cut out the country names, or mark them out with ink so you can no longer read them. Create copies of this blanked out map. When ready to quiz yourself, set a timer and, as quickly as you can, relabel this map. Complete this task numerous times, each time trying to best your previous attempts.
- Develop your ability to pair countries with the continents on which they rest by creating a country continent sort. On one sheet of paper, create an extensive list of countries in no particular order. On a separate sheet, list the continents. When ready to test yourself, move down the list of countries you created and place them under or next to the continent on which each of those countries rests.
