Smart Board Activities for First & Second Graders
- A Smart Board can be used to read stories to students. You can find lessons with favorite children's stories through Internet Smart Board resources. Lessons include a narrated animation with the text printed at the bottom of the screen. Some activities also include reading comprehension questions at the end of the story or require students to put story events in the correct sequence. First- and second-graders could also benefit from activities that practice word sounds and spelling. Activities might require students to click and drag letters to fill in words or to select the correct vowel needed to spell an object that is pictured.
- Smart Boards get first- and second-graders engaged in math lessons by making learning an interactive experience. Students might have to select whether a displayed number is even or odd, choose which of two numbers is highest or lowest, or insert the correct answer to simple addition or subtraction problems. Computer graphics help students master addition and subtraction by providing illustrations for them to count. Retail games teach students to count money by requiring them to choose the highest offer for an item for sale. Hidden picture math games require students to answer problems correctly to reveal parts of a hidden image. Kids can learn basic geometry with activities that require them to sort shapes.
- Smart Boards can be used to teach social studies and geography with interactive pictures and descriptions. You could do an activity that introduces your students to the different types of housing around the world and requires them to identify each type. Interactive world and United States maps are available online to teach first- and second-graders to recognize their country and home states. First- and second-graders would be engaged by an activity that teaches them about different types of toys through the ages and how they were used. You can use your Smart Board to show pictures of different geographical regions and the way people live there, including their type of dress and the foods they eat.
- Science activities on Smart Boards can teach students about everything from human anatomy to weather. A Smart Board can display a picture of a human body with an activity that requires students to name each body part. Students can sort food on a plate into different food groups or select food items to pack a healthy digital lunch. Kids can practice their knowledge of animals by matching adult animal names with the corresponding name for their babies. Your board could teach the class about solids and liquids with a melting or freezing simulation that depicts a solid ice cube transforming into a liquid puddle of water. If your class is learning about light, kids could participate in an activity that requires them to identify different sources of light and categorize them as artificial or natural.
