How the Eurovision Song Contest Works:

Before the Eurovision Song Contest, countries have competitions to select their national representative for the big event. At the Eurovision Song Contest, there are two semi-finals and a final event, in which viewers from all over Europe can call in to vote for their favorite (but not for their own country).

In 2009, Alexander Rybak (photo) of Norway won the finale of the Eurovision Song Contest by receiving a record-breaking number of votes from every single participating country. About 100 million people worldwide watch the Eurovision Song Contest every year and around 9 million votes are cast.
