    Self-assessment

    • Key to STEM career development is understanding why you believe a career in a technical field is right for you. Employment offices offer career assessments to determine whether the skills required for the field match up to your skills and interests. It is also helpful to interview someone in the technical field you wish to enter.

    Resources

    • Print and online resources are plentiful and offer detailed information about educational opportunities in STEM fields. Consider the courses offered in each education/training program, internship opportunities, and job placement after program completion. Just type "college guide" in an online search engine and you will find useful resources.

    Education

    • Keep in mind that some STEM fields require a bachelor's degree while others require certifications. Certification programs require less time in the classroom and can be more geared to your education needs. Investigate the specific training needs for your desired career, and compare both degree and certification options.

    Choosing

    • Once you know your specific education needs, research more than one program and compare what they are offering. Consider the specific course work the program is offering and how that aligns with your training needs. Find out what types of internship programs the program has that can help get you into your field. Finally, ask about job placement and information about where graduates are working.
