Symptoms

• Seizures may cause symptoms of confusion, blank staring and uncontrollable arm and leg movement. In severe cases, seizures may also cause the loss of consciousness.
  
  

Causes

• Seizures are often caused by a disorder called epilepsy. Seizures may also be caused by brain trauma or tumor, a stroke or alcohol withdrawal. In the case of children, a fever may cause a seizure.
  
  

Diagnosis

• To diagnose a seizure disorder, your doctor may run blood tests, a CT scan, an EEG test, an MRI and a neurological and behavioral exam.
  
  

Medication

• Medication is often used to treat seizure disorders. Anti-seizure medications can cause some side effects, such as dizziness, fatigue, weight gain and loss of bone density.
  
  

Surgery

• If medication is not enough to control your seizures, your doctor may recommend surgery. Surgery is only possible when your seizures originate in the part of your brain that does not control essential activities, such as speech.
