    • 1). Perform a search to see if your desired name is already taken by another business. There are a couple of ways you can go about this. Most states offer some type of free business name search on their websites. Typically, you won't get any details beyond the fact that the name is claimed, but that's all you need to know. You can also perform an Internet search of the business name and the state you do business in to see if any results comes up. This method is not as reliable, however, because there is no way to tell if the business is actually registered.

    • 2). Obtain the proper forms at the clerk's office of the county you do business in. Often, the forms will be available for download on their website. You can also request them via mail or show up in person. You will likely be required to provide multiple notarized copies of the document. You can find a notary at your bank or right at the clerk's office. They may or may not charge a small fee for their services.

    • 3). Pay the registration fee. This varies from state to state and even county to county. For example, Camden County, New Jersey charges a $50 fee. Essex County, New Jersey, charges $54 for the trade name. This information is typically available on the clerk's website.
