Bora Bora in the South Pacific - 4 x 4 Ride Into the Back Country of Bora Bora

While on Bora Bora, we did a shore excursion around the small island and up into the mountains via a four-wheel drive vehicle (4x4). Bora Bora, like most of the other Society Islands in French Polynesia, has one main road circling the island. In order to get a better picture of how spectacular the lagoon looks, you need to go up into the mountains or take a helicopter ride.
Since we had enjoyed the 4x4 trip so much on Tahiti, we decided to sign up for the one in Bora Bora.

It was better than any Disney World ride! We circled the island on the paved road, but went up into the mountains and back country three times via a MUDDY path to get views of the lagoon and sites below. All of the rain Bora Bora had the few days before we arrived just made for more fun. I only wish I could have gotten some pictures of some of the HUGE mud holes we sloshed through or what seemed like 75 degree inclines we roared up and over! We were all hanging on to the sides of the truck with both hands and laughing hysterically, so you'll just have to take my word for it!

These photos were taken on our 4 x 4 wheel drive around Bora Bora. Join me on a ride over and around the beautiful island of Bora Bora.

Patrick, the driver, stopped and picked bananas right off a plant growing by the trail. They were only about five inches long, but sweet and delicious. At one overlook, we ate pineapple he had peeled, drank juice, and tried to keep from falling in the mud. My mother was the last to get back in the truck when we got ready to leave the overlook. She slipped, and before we knew it, she was sitting in a muddy hole!

Her camera was full of mud and she looked like she had been in a "senior citizen" mud wrestling match. As soon as we all determined that the only thing damaged was her pride, we all joined her in laughter. Of course, then we tried to stay away from her the rest of the 4x4 trip in order to keep all of us from looking as wild as she did.
The water encircling Bora Bora is crystal clear, and the change in the depths can easily be seen in this photo and some of those that follow.

Bora Bora - Lush Vegetation and Mountains Cover Bora Bora

Bora Bora is encircled by a lagoon filled with fish and great diving opportunities. However, the small island is also perfect for exploring via 4 x 4 jeep.

Crabs on the Beach at Bora Bora

Sections of the beach at Bora Bora were covered with crabs and their holes in the sand. I guess they appreciate the beauty of the island, too!

Bora Bora Lagoon - View from Mountains of Bora Bora

Bora Bora island is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful Society Islands in French Polynesia, and probably in the world. Only 165 miles (264 kilometers) northwest of Tahiti, it is completely encircled by a coral reef, except for one narrow passage. This reef protection makes the translucent lagoon almost completely calm. Therefore, it is easily accessible to swimmers, snorkelers, and divers. The myriad of blue and green colors in the lagoon are indescribable.

I worry that the island's small size (only 38 square kilometers) and overbuilding may soon tinge its overall beauty for many visitors.

Palm trees and lush vegetation sometimes block the view of the Bora Bora lagoon, but they add perspective to photos.

The movie "South Pacific" was filmed in Hawaii, but many think Bora Bora was the setting James Michener had in mind for Bali Hai. This photo of Bora Bora certainly looks the way I've pictured Bali Hai!

World War II Cannon on Bora Bora Seems to Be Aiming at Cruise Ship!

Bora Bora has the remains of many World War II cannons high in the hills that were set up by the Americans to protect the island during the War. This cannon almost seems like it could be aiming at the Renaissance R3 (now the Tahitian Princess) cruise ship.

Considering that this cannon has been sitting in the rain and exposed to the elements for over 60 years, it seems to be in remarkably good shape.

This photo of Bora Bora shows why the island is considered a paradise island of the South Pacific. It also shows why you need a 4x4 vehicle to explore the back country of Bora Bora.
