Should I Use an Exercise Bike Before Boot Camp?
- The US Army website notes "running and cycling fit well into any physical training program because a good training effect can be reached, for example, with only three, 20 minute workouts per week for running, and twice that for cycling."
- Another view is that training should be specific to activity. Following this model, former Navy SEAL Stew Smith says, "You have to run -- so run! You have to take a swimming test -- so swim! You'll also have to do push-ups and sit-ups. Some boot camps even have you do pull-ups -- so practice those calisthenics."
- Focus your primary workouts on exercises specific to basic training. Supplement these workouts with recovery activities. For example: run and perform strength building exercises, targeting boot camp requirements on Monday, Wednesday and Friday; on Tuesday and Thursday, jump on an exercise bike. Get plenty of rest on the weekends.
