The Best Polarized Motorcycle Goggles

104 3
    • Polarized goggle lenses can be beneficial when riding in areas where light varies and is somewhat restricted. Light conditions will determine which factors need to be considered when looking for the best polarized motorcycle goggles. Primary factors include the different tints, mirrors and/or sensitivity levels. Top notch producers of goggles are Scott and Smith Optics; however, it all depends on the rider's preference. Polarized motorcycle goggles are considered part of a motorcycle racer's essential safety equipment.

    Sensor Lenses

    • Sensor lenses are the most advanced lenses on the market and consist of multi-layer mirror technology which helps reflect or dim the sunlight to increase visibility. Upon increased visibility, the lenses allow a brighter vision while cutting down on UV rays. These lenses also help with color definition and depth perception from intensified lighting and are used when making eye wear for welders and night-vision wear for the military. Additionally, moisture sensors can help reduce the amount of fogging. This is a unique characteristic for lenses and provides optimum performance from the goggles, giving motorcycle racers and rider's that must endure lengthy travel added eye protection.

    Visible Light Transmission (VLT)

    • VLT is a term used to define the amount of visible light that is able to pass through window film applied to glasses and goggles. The best glare control is achieved with lower ratings. Higher ratings permit the most natural light to pass through the film. Varying tints consist of different percentages, which is specifically made for diverse weather conditions. On a dark or cloudy day, a lens with a high VLT percentage would be preferred because the high VLT rating would allow more light to pass through the window film, increasing visibility of the rider. The opposite would be preferred on a bright sunny day; a lens with a lower VLT rating helps reduce the amount of sunlight.

    Mirrored Lenses

    • Mirrored lenses are a basic lens tinted with a mirror coating on the outer surface to help reduce harsh glares and light reflected to the rider's eyes. The mirror coatings used are extremely reflective and limit the amount of light that reaches the eyes. Goggles with mirrored lenses have 10 percent to 60 percent less light than uncoated lenses and can be applied on top of different coatings and colors. The different colors of coating used are often thought to be for cosmetic purposes; however, varying colors actually alter bright colors and glare from the sun, which in turn, reflects and produces glare for the rider. Metallic coatings are the most common and are available in copper, gold and silver. Advanced mirrored lenses are also available that include VLT ratings.
