    • 1). Use an antihistamine to outsmart your allergies. Take diphenhydramine as needed for occasional allergy issues. Use a 24-hour antihistamine such as loratadine or cetirizine for persistent seasonal allergies. Use antihistamines to outsmart your allergies by taking them before they affect your body.Talk to your doctor about a stronger, prescribed antihistamine if the over-the-counter products prove ineffective.

    • 2). Purchase a neti pot (sinus wash) at a pharmacy for less than $20. Mix 1 cup of warm water with a ½ teaspoon of sea salt and pour into the neti pot. Place the neti pot on the right nostril and tilt the head so the chin is parallel with the shoulders. Pour the entire contents into the nose and allow it come out the other nostril. Gently blow the nose and repeat on the left nostril.

    • 3). Avoid allergens that are causing an allergic reaction. Keep the windows and door closed, if you have outdoor allergies. Stay away from pets if you are allergic to dander and keep your house clean and dust free if you're allergic to dust. Avoid public places where germs and contaminants exist in excess.

    • 4). Take vitamin C, a natural antihistamine, on a daily basis, along with other drugs, such as antihistamines and decongestants. Break up the vitamin C dose in three segments. Take the treatment in the morning, after lunch and with dinner to maintain the proper levels of the vitamin throughout the day. Increase the dosage to four times daily if your allergies worsen. Consult a doctor on the dosage that is appropriate for you.

    • 5). Run a cool midst humidifier at night while you sleep. Running a cold mist humidifier helps to coat the sinus cavity and keep it from swelling or becoming irritated. Monitor the humidity levels as too much humidity can encourage mold growth. Maintain 40 percent humidity to moisten the sinus cavity and prevent mold and mildew from growing.
