Use of Omalizumab for Treatment of Atopic Dermatitis
Is there any benefit to using Xolair injections for severe atopic dermatitis in a 7-year-old with serum IgE levels greater than 600 IU/mL?

Omalizumab (Xolair--Genentech) is currently indicated for adults and adolescents (12 years of age and older) with moderate to severe persistent asthma, a positive skin test or in vitro reactivity to a perennial aeroallergen, and symptoms that are inadequately controlled with inhaled corticosteroids. The use of omalizumab in the treatment of atopic dermatitis has yet to be clearly defined. Research protocols are planned to determine its efficacy in treatment of primary atopic dermatitis and as a comorbid condition with asthma. In a study involving 5- to 11-year-old children with asthma, Ig E levels up to 1300 IU/mL will be studied.
