How to Find the Size of a Circuit Breaker

    • 1). Locate the breaker box, which is usually attached to an outside wall, or inside the cellar/buildup area. If necessary, follow the route of the main power cables running from the city hookup on the street, and see where they attach to your house. They will run down and eventually connect to the breaker box.

    • 2). Open the breaker box's cover -- it will be hinged on the side or on the tip. The front of all breakers will be visible, incorporating the larger main breaker and each individual breaker that serves the home's circuits.

    • 3). Locate the circuit breaker you are looking for. The size (maximum amperage) will be marked on the front of the breaker, generally with the amps and the letter "A" next to the number (15A, 20A, 30A). If the number is not printed on the front, it will be printed on the end of the breaker's manual on/off switch. Make a note of the amperage and close the breaker box's cover.
