How to Leave a Job if You Have a Contract
- 1). Read over your contract before you talk to your employer about leaving. Review areas that mention what happens when you break the contract, so that you can consider the consequences of doing so.
- 2). Consult with a labor attorney. In certain instances, a labor attorney has the industry knowledge and negotiating skills needed to work with the company to get you out of the contract. Moreover, he can tell you what to expect from the company and advise you of your rights.
- 3). Negotiate the release from your contract with your employer and with your attorney, should you opt to hire one. If you decide to handle matters on your own, keep in mind that if your employer wants to play hardball, you could end up in court. Explain your reasons for wanting to leave, and ask if your employer can work with you to release you from your contract.
- 4). Put all terms in writing. If your employer decides to release you from the contract, get the new agreement in writing. Detail what was agreed to on your behalf and the employer's so that the company can't come back later and decide to pursue legal action.
