As many owners of chinchillas will tell you they are a great pet to have.
Not only are they cute they are also very social and compared to say a cat or dog are relatively inexpensive to take care of.
However, it is important that when it comes to learning how to look after one of these creatures you learn as much as you can about them before you actually get one as a pet.
If you don't have the right chinchilla care information available to you then they may become ill very quickly.
In this article we take a look at some of the mistakes that have been made by people who have not learnt the correct ways to care for these beautiful but very delicate creatures.
By knowing about these mistakes you can then ensure that you avoid them and so have a happy and healthy pet chinchilla for many years to come.
Mistake 1 - Placing Their Cage At The Wrong Location When it comes to placement of your chinchilla's cage in the home make sure that it is somewhere that will not get too warm or too hot.
Although these animals originate from South America if the temperature gets above 30 degrees centigrade there is every possibility of your pet suffering from heat stroke.
Plus the cage should not be placed directly in any place where a draft may occur as if the temperature around them falls below 10 degrees centigrade this can prove detrimental to their health as well.
Mistake 2 - Not Allowing Them To Bathe Regularly You must ensure that you provide your chinchilla with the opportunity to take a dust bath at least once each week.
This is crucial as not only does it help to keep their coat in good condition but is important to their overall hygiene needs.
Also you will have plenty of fun watching as they do take their bath.
Mistake 3 - Providing Your Chinchilla With Too Many Treats Although you may think that providing your pet chinchilla with treats regularly is helping you to bond with your animal but it is actually causing them more harm than good.
It is best to only allow them a small treat such as raisins once a day and not every time you feel like it.
Plus at no time should you give them foods containing chocolate or industrial sugar.
Mistake 4 - Not Cleaning Their Cage When it comes to you caring for your chinchilla properly you should be cleaning out their cage at least once a week, but preferably twice.
When you are cleaning out the cage make sure that the bedding is replaced completely.
Along with a general cage clean once or twice each week every day the food bowl along with the tube to the water bottle must be cleaned.
If the cage remains dirty then not only will your chinchilla be unhappy but made lead to them suffering from infections or illness caused by growth of bacteria and other germs in the cage.
