Liposuction Facts
- Liposuction is most commonly performed on the waist/stomach, buttocks, hips and love handles, but it may also be performed on the chin, neck, knees, calves, ankles, breasts, thighs, arms and back.
- Costs for liposuction can range anywhere from $3,000 to $10,000 (as of 2009), depending on the extent of the procedure, the experience and credentials of the surgeon and the geographical location.
- Liposuction is generally performed with a thin, hollow tube called a cannula. The cannula is inserted into the fatty tissue by the surgeon, and the fatty tissue is removed through the use of an attached pump.
- The effects of liposuction generally include bruising, slight bleeding and swelling, particularly within 48 hours of the surgery. Bruising can last up to 10 days.
- The recovery time for a liposuction procedure is usually between one and two weeks. Recommended downtime is two to four days.
- Some of the risks involved with liposuction include significant bleeding, nerve damage and blood clots.
