Dean Koontz is by far one of the most popular authors on the planet whose books have sold millions and continue to top the charts year after year.
I have always been a fan but that doesn't mean that I like all the books.
Whilst most are fantastic a few fall short of the mark expected from such a talented writer.
I first happened across Dean's work when I was in my teens.
I was always a horror fan and was always on the lookout for the next blood splattered book cover.
Although none of his covers featured any blood, the design was just enough to arouse my curiosity.
After spending a long time picking up one book after another I settled on Tick Tock.
Mainly because it was quite small compared to some of his other ones and I thought I'd give myself an easy start.
Needless to say it had me hooked.
The style of writing was easy to read and the story was interesting and different.
I don't want to go on about the story here as it will be on a separate review on the site, but some books you come across are just cheap knock-off copies of a previous bestseller.
And that annoys me.
If you're a writer then you're blessed with an imagination.
Use it and stop copying others just because you think it will make you a dollar or two.
Back to Dean.
If you like horror, suspense with a dose of thriller thrown in for good measure then you won't be disappointed but I do stress that for me there are some books by Dean he would have been better off not writing.
On the whole he is a world class writer and I'm willing to give the few bad books a by-ball to promote the many good ones.
A lot of his earlier books are among the best he's written with the later books leaving a lot to be desired.
The characters are very two dimensional and not at all believable and even the storyline itself is something you regret paying for.
I'd rather re-read an older novel than waste my time on a later one.
Having said that I still wait for the latest book to come out because I know what he's capable of and hopefully one day he'll release a book worthy of having his name on the front.
