How to Treat Kidney Disease in Cats With Heart Disease

104 7
    • 1). Check with your veterinarian to make sure you have a correct diagnosis. Both kidney disease and heart disease can resemble other illnesses, and it's important to make sure that you have a medically accurate diagnosis.

    • 2). Take careful notes when speaking with your veterinarian. In some cases, the heart disease might be caused by the kidney disease, which is why your veterinarian will probably be treating the kidney disease through diet, while the heart disease might be treated with drugs. This is because kidney disease responds to diet more quickly than heart disease does.

    • 3). Get any and all literature pertaining to the diseases your cat might have. Read it thoroughly and ask any questions if there are any issues that you are uncertain about.

    • 4). Make sure that you follow whatever regimen carefully. It's going to be tempting to give your cat whatever treats you normally would give him, but you need to make sure that you focus on only providing the foods and supplements that your veterinarian prescribes. Be prepared for your cat to possibly turn his nose up at the food that you're trying to get him to eat. That's perfectly normal.

    • 5). Monitor fluid intake and output carefully. Make sure that you tell your veterinarian immediately if your cat begins drinking more water than usual or if his fluid output in the cat box increases.

    • 6). Watch carefully for signs of any interaction with whatever heart medications your cat is on. Call your veterinarian immediately if you notice that your cat has difficulty breathing.
